1. Who is Valdez Parks and Recreation?

Valdez Parks and Recreation is part of the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department, and is comprised of the Parks Maintenance and Recreation Divisions. We are responsible for operating and maintaining the City numerous parks, trails, cemeteries, and recreation facilities, and provide residents and visitors with year-round recreation services and activities.

2. What is a Recreation Account and how do I create one?

A Recreation Account is required to register for classes and programs, and to rent any park or recreation facilities. To create a Recreation Account, please visit www.valdezak.gov/register, select Login/Create Account in the upper left corner, then select Create Your VPR Account. Learn more about how to create your account and register for classes and programs here.

3. What is a Rec Pass and how can I get one?

A Rec Pass is our membership program. It is available to both residents and non-resident alike. It provides the cardholder with free daily admission to the Valdez City Pool and discounted rates on recreation classes and programs, as well as rentals. A Rec Pass is free to Valdez residents, but we require proof of residency. Non-residents may purchase a Rec Pass in three (3) month increments. A Rec Pass may be obtained in person only at either the Woodman Recreation Center or Valdez City Pool. 

4. What is the Valdez Compass and where can I get one?

The Valdez Compass is the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department's seasonal activity guide. It is printed three times per year and provides information on our facilities, classes and programs, special events, and much more! 10. Where is the Rock Wall located?

The Rock Wall is located inside the Gilson Middle School, located at 357 Robe River Dr.

11. Which recreation facilities, park spaces, and shelters are available to rent and how do I make a reservation?

12. How do I make a reservation for a campground?

The operations of the Valdez Glacier Campground and Allison Point Campground are contracted out by the City. To make a reservation, please contact the campground operator listed for each campground by clicking here. 

13. When are the winter trails groomed?

The Parks Maintenance Division maintains and grooms approximately 33 miles of winter trails as conditions and snow depths allow. View a list of current trails and the grooming schedule here. The grooming schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions and availability of equipment.

14. How do I report a problem or concern?

16. When is Salmonberry Ski Hill open and what do I need?

Salmonberry Ski Hill is open on a seasonal basis as snow depths and conditions allow. Our typical hours of operation at Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am- 4:00pm but may be adjusted due to weather. To ski or snowboard at Salmonberry Ski Hill, all participants must complete a general waiver and have a Salmonberry Annual Pass. Passes are free to residents and non-residents, and may be obtained on-site or at the Woodman Recreation Center. We do not have equipment available to rent, but The Prospector in town has skis and snowboards available. We offer free daily rentals helmets to all participants, just ask at the Warming Hut.
