Internet Rules & Guidelines
Purpose:
The Valdez Consortium Library is committed to providing free, equal and meaningful access to knowledge and information in a variety of formats including print, audiovisual and electronic. The Internet is a primary platform for access to informational, educational, recreational and cultural resources for library users of all ages and backgrounds. Resources available on the Internet supplement and complement the collection of the Valdez Consortium Library. Library staff shall develop such rules and procedures as are necessary to ensure fair and reasonable use of Internet resources.
Disclaimer:
The Valdez Consortium Library does not monitor and has no control over information accessed through the Internet and cannot be responsible for its content. In keeping with its Collection Development Policy, the Library's role in providing Internet service is access, not endorsement. The user should exercise judgment in assessing the credibility of information viewed.
Child Safety on the Internet:
Parents and guardians are responsible for the information accessed by their children during an Internet session. Children who use the Internet unsupervised may be exposed to inappropriate or disturbing information and images. Parents are encouraged to discuss the use of the Internet in relation to their own family's values and boundaries with their children and to monitor their children's use of the Internet.
Procedures for Use of Library Computers:
Library computers are available at no charge to all library users. Internet computers are accessed with your library card number, or by obtaining a visitor login from the front desk. Computers may be reserved up to 24 hours prior to the reservation time. Library users are granted one 30 minute reservation per day.
A black and white printer is available. The cost for printing is $.25 per page.
Responsibilities of Library Users and Staff:
Use of the Valdez Consortium Library's electronic resources for illegal or criminal activity is prohibited. Users are to comply with all local, state, and federal laws.
Library staff will not monitor Internet use, except for the purposes of making and cancelling a reservation. The user, or the parent/guardian of a minor, is responsible for their internet session. The Library reserves the right to terminate an Internet session that disrupts library services or is in violation of the Library's policies and procedures.
Failure to comply with all laws, policies and procedures may result in a loss of computer privileges and/or the loss of library privileges.
Wireless:
Free wireless access is available at the Valdez Consortium Library. This is an unsecure network that users access at their risk, so use caution when transmitting personal information. Connection to the Valdez Consortium Library's wireless network signifies agreement to abide by the Library's policies and procedures.
